(The Malaysian Insider) - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad warned the ongoing global economic crisis will continue long into the future as the West continues spending in a “state of denial.”
The former prime minister said in his blog yesterday that Western countries continue “believing that they can somehow continue to remain rich. They are unable to behave like poor people.”
On the same day Datuk Seri Najib Razak tabled a budget that aims to rein in the deficit to 4.7 per cent, Dr Mahathir said the West “will not recover because they are still in a state of denial.
“They still believe they are rich, as rich as before they plunged into the crisis. They must keep up the big power wealthy country image even if their people have no jobs, riot and protest.
“The great financial crisis will be with us for a long time. Even when it is resolved the aftermath will see slow recovery for the giants of the West,” he wrote.
“How nice it would be if our pocket is picked, we are allowed to print some money to replace what is lost,” he said, mocking the United States’ quantitative easing measures which has seen its federal reserve print US$3 trillion (RM9.5 billion) since the start of the financial crisis in 2008.
“Now Britain is following in the footsteps of elder brother,” he added, referring to the United Kingdom’s recent move to print £75 billion (RM370 billion) to help distressed banks.

I'm hardly impressed by his view on world affairs. He doesnt seem to be able to articulate views without getting constantly emotional about his perspective of the west doing injustice to him or people like him. As an elderly statesman(which I wonder whether he deserves that title) he should be more matured in airing his views. ...

The problem in the west is similar to Bolehland. In the west, money from the poor are being used to bail out banks and finance companies. Rob from the poor and bail out the rich when in fact the rich mismanaged what they have been entrusted for.
What difference is there from Bolehland? in Bolehland also the rich robs the poor. A good example would be your son's Konsortium Perkapalan. When it went "belly up", wasn't the money from the poor are being used to save your son's arse?
Same thing with MAS, PKFZ and others that we are experiencing now!
And don't talk about the west are "unable to behave' like poor people. Look at your sons' behavior, all of them are unable to "behave like poor people". And don't get me started with ex PeeM, Sleepy Head Fcuklah and current PeeM Jibby with his wife, FLOM Rosmah. . ., all of them cannot "behave like poor people"! On top of that you have Francis Yeoh, Vincent Tan and the Indian 4 number ekor King who will continue to give you your 30% commission. MM missed the chance to cleanse Malaysia of termite-infested and rotten-wood companies during the financial tsumani of 1997. Till today we are still inheriting such rotten companies in our economy.
They could have been allowed to be swept away and a new economy be rebuilt based on solid financial principles alone (i.e discarding race-bias and cronyism). The tsunami was the best excuse to install a new order, but he did not take up that opportunity.
Whether he missed the chance by intention or not, or by sheer political unwillingness, he had thus failed.
