CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE - INTENSIVE ENGLISH
INTRODUCTIONThe Certificate of Attendance-Intensive English, offered through the Department of American Degree Transfer Program (ADP), is designed to allow international students to become more proficient in English while gaining additional academic and career skills.This unique program integrates learner-centred English language classroom instruction, student mentoring and intercultural activities. Students are given enriching learning opportunities for inquiry, exploration, investigation and communication. The program includes many direct participatory experiences, outdoor activities, field trips and daily interaction with students from Malaysia and other 59 countries in HELP's community.
FOR WHOMStudents who have a strong desire to improve their proficiency in English for academic or professional purposes.University graduates who wish to increase their English proficiency level prior to entering into employment.Students who wish to improve their English proficiency to pursue tertiary studies in an English speaking country such as the USA, UK or Australia.Students who have a good command of the language but want to take specialized courses to improve their pronunciation, develop public speaking skills, learn creative writing, etc.Anyone who is interested to visit, discover and experience Malaysia's diverse heritage and culture and learn English at the same time.Students who are waiting to start another program and wish to "warm-up" their English skills prior to beginning their degree program.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE (4-week duration) IE 091 Intensive English 1IE 092 Intensive English 2IE 093 Intensive English 3IE 094 Intensive English 4IE 095 Intensive English 5IE 096 Intensive English 6
MODULE SYNOPSESIE 091 Intensive English 1 This is a basic level specially designed for students with no basic knowledge of English. It introduces the students to the fundamentals of grammar and the four language skills - reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will receive 20 hours of classroom teaching per week focusing on grammar, vocabulary and the four language skills. In addition, students are given 5 hours of one-to-one consultation with their lecturers per week. IE 092 Intensive English 2 IE 092, which is an elementary course, provides a foundation in the structure of the language, thus, further building students’ understanding of basic grammar, vocabulary and functions of English. Just as in IE 091, students doing IE 092 get 20 hours of classroom teaching per week focusing on similar aspects of the language. In addition, students are given 5 hours of one-to-one consultation with the lecturers. IE 093 Intensive English 3 This is a pre-intermediate level course which focuses on developing a strong foundation for English through continued emphasis on the four language skills. In addition to 20 hours of classroom learning per week, students attend 5 hours of one-to-one consultation with the lecturers per week.IE 094 Intensive English 4 This is an intermediate level course, which follows on from the strong foundations laid in Intensive English 3. Just as in IE 093, students receive 20 hours of classroom contact per week in the course. The 5 hours of one-to-one consultation with the respective lecturers per week provides an avenue for students to practice and enhance their speaking skills. At this level, students not only engage in language activities such as debates but also in writing reviews. IE 095 Intensive English 5 This is an upper-intermediate level course that helps students to further develop their ability to use English to communicate effectively. At this level, students not only learn and use English in context but also embark on different types of essay writing namely expository. In addition to the 5 hours of one-to-one consultation, students undergo 20 hours of classroom contact per week in the course. The consultation hours provide opportunities for students to apply and improve their language skills.IE 096 Intensive English 6 This is an advanced course designed for students who can cope with most text-types including business-related articles. It also covers vital aspects of grammar and vocabulary used in real life settings and provides a forum for practicing presentations. Students get to develop and practice their writing skills which are mainly expository in nature. In addition, students also embark on summary writing skills, and are required to present a project paper. This level prepares students with the kind of language skills required in pursuing a tertiary course. Just as all the levels, students undergo 20 hours of classroom teaching in addition to the 5 hours of one-to-one consultation per week.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIESFocused on the uniqueness of the Malaysian culture and Malaysia's beautiful surroundings, the program incorporates a stimulating and exciting blend of outdoor activities: Trips to popular and famous spots in Malaysia eg Petronas Twin Towers, Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands, Penang Island, Historical City of Malacca, Tioman Island and others.Cultural shows, food fests, carnivals and museum visits.Sports: hiking, basketball, volleyball, street soccer, table tennis and others.Camping in the lush tropical forests of the National Park.Host Family: Students can stay with a Host Family to enable them to spend an important portion of their time involved in the daily life of their Host Family.Note:Only selected activities will be organised subject to the response of students. Some activities may incur additional cost which will be borne by the students. The Host Family arrangement is subject to availability only.
METHODOLODYStudents are engaged in a communicative approach to the English language, daily oral workshops and interaction with peers and mentors, which provide learning opportunities for gaining proficiency in second language acquisition. Reading and writing workshops focusing on different forms of writing through reflection, daily journals, weekly compositions, as well as working on different projects and presentations. Grammar, vocabulary, idioms, and pronunciation lead students towards speaking with greater confidence.
PLACEMENT TESTAll students coming into the program of Certificate of Attendance-Intensive English are required to sit for a Placement Test prior to starting the program to ensure placement in a course suitable for their level of proficiency in the language. This test assesses the students' English proficiency in terms of reading and comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, and writing skills.
ASSESSMENTA combination of assessment methods will be used, including class participation, presentations, assignments, projects, quizzes and end-of-semester exams.
CERTIFICATES OF ATTENDANCECertificates of Attendance will be awarded for students who have satisfactorily fulfilled the assessment and attendance requirements.
