The Malaysian Directors’ Academy (MINDA) has announced the appointed of Datuk Abdul Aziz Abu Bakar, 56, as its Chief Executive Officer effective October 1, 2009.Aziz is MINDA’s first CEO since its formation in 2006, and brings years of experience in the area of Human Resource (HR) to MINDA, according to a statement.Prior to this appointment as MINDA’s first CEO, Aziz was the Chief Human Capital Officer at Telekom Malaysia, a position he occupied for five years. There he was responsible for, among others, setting the HR direction through the formulation and overseeing of the implementation of HR strategies in line with Telekom Malaysia’s business objectives. He has also served in various senior positions across a number of industry sectors as Managing Director of Intria Berhad, a diverse group of companies with interests in multiple areas including Construction, Project Management and Healthcare; as Executive Vice President, Human Resource at RHB Bank; and as General Manager of Human Resource and General Manager of Human Resource and Transformation (Commercial Business) with responsibility for ASEAN at Shell Malaysia.MINDA Chairman Datuk Ahmad Pardas Senin said: “The MINDA board joins me in heartily welcoming Dato’ Aziz in his new role. I have every confidence that with his extensive experience in human resource management, he will be able to lead MINDA towards achieving its aim of addressing Board quality and Board performance, particularly among the Government-linked companies (GLCs).”Aziz has meanwhile also expressed his enthusiasm for MINDA and his aspirations for the organisation. “I am thrilled to join MINDA at this time, and I am humbled by the confidence which the organisation has shown in its support of my appointment. Human capital remains one of Malaysia’s key competitive advantages in the global economy, and I whole-heartedly believe in MINDA’s aim of facilitating learning and reinforcing the knowledge, skills and mind-sets of directors of GLCs as we continue the journey towards becoming world-class organisations,” he said.MINDA is an entity established by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated with the objective of addressing Board Performance by equipping directors of GLCs with world-class knowledge, skills and the mindset to perform to a consistently high standard.In this regard, MINDA seeks to assist GLC Boards in focusing on its fundamental roles and responsibilities particularly in the areas of corporate governance, strategy, corporate performance management, development of future leaders and human capital, and risk management. MINDA will be organising a Directors' Forum themed 'Board Response to Turbulent Times' which will take place in Langkawi from 22 to 25 November 2009.
