Asian dimension as French state-owned arms company faces murder, bribery allegations
Breham said Razak Baginda’s company Perimekar had received the commission for "supporting the contract," which he said was a euphemism for unexplained costs, and also for "housing the crew" of the submarines in France. Perimekar was wholly owned by another company, KS Ombak Laut Sdn Bhd, which in turn was also controlled by Razak Baginda. His wife Mazalinda, a lawyer and former magistrate, was the principal shareholder, according to the French lawyers.
Written by John Berthelsen, Asia Sentinel
After years of inaction and coverup, details are emerging in France of the sale of armaments by the French state-owned defense contractor DCNS to countries across the world including Pakistan, Malaysia, Chile, India, Taiwan and Saudi Arabia, with bribes and kickbacks built into DCNS’s budget, ensnaring politicians across the globe.
Allegations involving DCNS, formerly known as DCN, range from murder to bribery and corruption and go from defense procurement officials in each of those countries to some of the top politicians in France.
Under the French legal system, prosecutors under the control of the Ministry of Justice must make a preliminary enquiry, during which no one has access to the files, so that any information the police have obtained cannot be shared. The prosecutors have been stymied for years by the ministry. However, investigators appear to be losing their awe of politicians all the way up to President Nicholas Sarkozy.
In September, for instance, Nicholas Bazire, 54, the best man at Sarkozy’s wedding to supermodel Carla Bruni, was arrested and charged with misuse of public funds in the 1995 presidential campaign of Edouard Balladur. Sarkozy was Balladur’s campaign spokesman and budget minister at the time. Another friend, Thierry Gaubert, Sarkozy’s cabinet chief when he was budget and communication minister, was arrested earlier. Sarkozy is seeking avoid the appointment of an instruction judge in an effort to keep the cases under control. But the political knives may be out for Sarkozy.
That increases the chances that investigating judges will allow prosecutors a more detailed look at DCNS’s books to probe kickbacks in Pakistan, where 11 French submarine engineers were killed in a bomb attack, and Taiwan, where a number of murders and suicides have been recorded in connection with the sale of frigates to Taiwan’s navy. The details can be found here.
William Bourdon, the leader of a three-lawyer team investigating Malaysia’s US$1 billion purchase of submarines from DCNS for the Malaysian reform organization Suaram, earlier told Asia Sentinel he hoped his team would have access to the files by October. Bourdon was summarily deported from Malaysia in July after giving a speech in Penang describing some of the details of the allegations.
Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak was defense minister at a time when Malaysia bought two Scorpene-class submarines from DCNS. Included in the transaction was a €114 million commission paid to Perimekar Sdn Bhd, a company owned by Najib’s close friend, Abdul Razak Baginda. The transaction has been mired in controversy since 2006, when Altantuya Shaariibuu, a party girl and translator ostensibly hired to help in the contract, was murdered after demanding US$500,000 from Razak Baginda, her jilted lover, for unspecified reasons. Razak Baginda was acquitted of her murder under unusual circumstances without having to provide a defense. Two of Najib’s police bodyguards were convicted and sentenced to death. They have appealed the verdict.
Joseph Breham, a lawyer with Solicitors International Human Rights Group and a member of Bourdon’s team, said in London last week that DCNS often budgeted as much as 8 to 12 percent of its total receipts as "commissions" paid to grease sales of armaments in third-world countries. Breham’s speech was reported for the Malaysia website Malaysiakini by Miriam Mokhtar.
Malaysia bought two Scorpene submarines from DCNS for about US$1 billion and leased a third from a DCNS subsidiary for training. Of that, the €114 commission was paid to Razak Baginda’s company, Perimekar Sdn Bhd.
Breham questioned why such vast sums could be paid to Razak Baginda’s company. The €114 million obtained by Ombak Laut, he said, was more than the amount paid by France to all of its primary school teachers for a year. He also revealed that DCNS’s former finance director had written memos in which he alleged that €31 million of the €114 million had been used for "commercial engineering", a term Breham said had no legal meaning.
Breham said that in France, before 2002, any money used to bribe foreign officials was tax deductible. When the former finance director of DCN made a claim for the €31million allegedly used to bribe the Malaysians for the purchase of the Scorpenes, the Minister of Budget questioned such a large bribe, although he did eventually authorize the tax break.

Malaysia is world famous not only for being No.1 in the world for human trafficking, internet and phone scam, ivory trafficking, wild life trafficking, drug smuggling, Obedient Wives Club, corrupt government officials, witnesses flying out of anti corruption agencies buildings, etc BUT also for taking racial affirmative policies to new soaring heights.
The French prosecutors should spend a few months in Malaysia to understand that kickbacks and commissions to bumiputra companies for all government or GLC projects are allowed and encouraged under the UMNO approved NEP. The French prosecutors have no case at all.
The two Razaks should not have any worries of being prosecuted because the 1Malaysia NEP laws shall protect them. They should just continue living their lavish and luxurious lifestyles "tanpa was-was". ..

In Malysia, that money is worth about 20,000 low cost houses which can be given free to the poor from all races or 90 million free meals to the poor in Malaysia or the cost of books and fees for all Primary and Secondary gomen schools for one year or the cost of all college and Uni fees for one year or the cost of 13,500 new Proton cars and so on.
In Melaka, Chief Minister Rustam, the submarine-on-land project was just starting and has been cancelled due to pressure. It was supposed to cost 20 million Rm and 10M to go to his pocket.

Contract to be signed before end of the year.

Malaysians seem unwilling today to accept anything less than real democracy....”DEMOKRASI TERPIMPIN” IS LONG DEAD!!
By Joshua Kurlantzick , The Daily Beast
For the second time in roughly a decade, Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is facing trumped-up charges. But this time around, his supporters are unlikely to yield until they see real democracy.
Much has changed in Southeast Asia over the past decade. But travel to downtown Kuala Lumpur today, and walk along the Moorish-influenced public greens, and suddenly the Malaysian capital seems trapped in the 1990s.
At that time, the Asian financial crisis was battering the country’s economy, and urbanites hit by the downturn and frustrated by the country’s tightly controlled political system, had taken to the streets, where they were met by riot control troops, who battered them on a daily basis until the government’s long-ruling coalition put Anwar Ibrahim, the country’s popular opposition leader, on trial. The charge: Sodomy, a serious crime in a predominantly Muslim nation.
Though the trial was a farce—accusers later recanted their statements, and Anwar appeared in court with what the government called a “self-inflicted” black eye—he was convicted, and ultimately served six years in prison.
Today, the same story seems to be unfolding across the city. Anwar is again on trial for sodomy, in a sketchy case full of holes, which the government seems to have initiated to end his career and weaken the opposition. As a result, tens of thousands of middle-class Malaysians have been rallying, both to demand his freedom and for greater political openness, and once again, the government has responded with beatings, tear gas, and water cannon.
Yet unlike a decade ago, the demonstrators aren't likely to give up so easily. Though Anwar could once again be sent to jail, Malaysian politics have been changed irrevocably—both by him and by the current prime minister—and Malaysians seem unwilling today to accept anything less than real democracy.
Roughly 10 years ago, the trial of Anwar, a former government insider, drew sizable protests. But these demonstrations had little lasting impact. Anwar had only recently broken from the government, and the nascent opposition had few other leaders and little to no ability to organize in an effective fashion. The government had complete control of the print and broadcast media and easily rigged elections, making it difficult for activists to organize once the riot troops attacked. And while the Asian financial crisis had dealt a significant blow to Malaysia’s economy, the country was still doing better than others in the region, leading to some political complacency among the middle class.
Over the past decade, the country and the region have changed dramatically, even if Anwar’s plight has not. China and even Indonesia and Thailand have witnessed tremendous economic growth while Malaysia, whose weak education system and brutal politics have driven entrepreneurs out of the country, has seen its economy sputter. Educated Malaysians are fleeing the country, as is their purchasing power. And the spread of blogs and social media in a highly wired country has allowed activists to bypass the government-controlled media and combat election rigging, while a decade of largely grassroots organization has strengthened and diversified the opposition.
These days, a broad alliance of secular liberals and Chinese minorities who are inveighing against the state’s affirmative action policies for ethnic Malays, have aligned with an Islamist party that wants Sharia law to have greater influence in a mostly secular country. More united, these seemingly oppositional forces have managed to win four Malaysian state government elections, and in 2008, came close to gaining a majority in parliament.
Though Anwar could once again be sent to jail, Malaysian politics has been changed irrevocably—by both him and the current prime minister.
During that election, an aide to Anwar named Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan suddenly came forward with new sodomy allegations against his boss. The fact that the accuser had waited 48 hours to make his accusation, ruining any potential semen samples—and that he met with senior government officials before making his claim—made the charges, which Anwar has denied, seem highly dubious.
As the trial proceeds this month, Malaysia’s judiciary seems unsure how to handle it. In the past, as in Anwar’s first trial, judges simply did whatever the government wanted; they fashioned their rulings to fit the punishment that the regime desired. But with public criticism mounting, and the opposition seemingly gaining momentum daily, the possibility that some of these judges could one day face punishment for unjust rulings has left them unsure of how to handle the case, and created an opening for a fair trial. Already, the judge has rejected some of the prosecution’s evidence, a small victory that Anwar rarely witnessed during his previous trial.
Whether or not Anwar is convicted, many senior government officials seem to now realize that Malaysia is bound to change, and that putting Anwar behind bars will not end calls for reform. Though hardliners in the ruling coalition, which have governed since the country’s independence in 1957, seem to be eagerly awaiting Anwar’s sentence, the country’s prime minister, Najib Tun Razak, has in recent months, begun to sound a lot like, well, Anwar himself.
In September, to the dismay of many Malaysians who had long viewed the prime minister as no different than his predecessors, Najib announced he was ending the decades-old Internal Security Act, which allowed the government to imprison anyone without charges. The prime minister has admitted that the country’s economy is faltering, and he’s tried to lure educated Malaysians back home. He’s even called for ending decades of affirmative action programs designed to benefit ethnic Malays—a risky move in a Malay-dominated country.
Najib has gone so far that, even if Anwar is acquitted, the ruling coalition might genuinely triumph in the 2013 parliamentary elections. Whatever the outcome of the trial and the election, the country should finally be able to move forward and Malaysians should finally be able to put the 1990s behind them.

"..the ruling coalition might genuinely triumph in the 2013 parliamentary elections." - that the UMNOputras may triumphed is not uncertain but a genuine victory?
Please!! Don't take the rakyat to be fools- with such an uneven playing field & the EC all but in name a division of the UMNOputras!!
Anwar Sodomy 2 trial - yes, he got that right, it's a sham sodomy trial but the UMNOputras are dead set to get Anwar behind bars & I believe the Lingam scripted verdict is already with the judicial officer involved!!

Najib welcomed and met Saiful in his house 2 days before the alleged sodomy and he denied meeting Saiful initially on national TV, only to force admit this 2 days later. Now Najib is telling the court, and he really wants us to believe, that his meeting with Saiful has got nothing to do with the Sodomy 2. ...

How can the consensual sex of sodomy, with no evidence of the use of force, be punishable to one of the two parties involved only? Surely this is a travesty of justice in itself. Let alone all the laughable evidence so far presented by the prosecutor. Any court of justice worth its salt would have thrown the case out a long time ago, but not this farcical Malaysian court. ...

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 — The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock today failed to challenge the Royal Commission of Inquiry’s (RCI) conclusion that the Selangor DAP political aide committed suicide in 2009.
Teoh’s family filed the application for judicial review against the RCI on August 24.
The RCI, which was chaired by sitting Federal Court judge Tan Sri James Foong, found that Teoh had been driven to suicide after relentless questioning by investigators from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The five-man panel wrapped up its report on June 15 after hearing testimony from 70 witnesses in its bid to unravel the mysterious circumstances behind Teoh’s death at the then Selangor MACC headquarters on July 16, 2009.
Judge Datuk Rohana Yusof ruled today that an RCI could not be subjected to a judicial review, as the court was bound by an earlier federal court decision.
Lawyer Gobind Singh Deo, who is representing the Teoh family, told The Malaysian Insider the decision was made in chambers.
Senior federal counsel Shamsul Bol Hassan represented the RCI, whose commissioners were named as respondents.
“The judge’s decision was based on the federal court’s decision in Datuk V. K Lingam’s appeal, where they ruled that recommendations of the RCI are not subject to judicial review,” he said.
Gobind said the only option the family had right now is to challenge the federal court’s decision in Lingam’s case, but said that he was not sure whether they wanted to do that.
“There is still the revision application on the coroner’s open verdict, which will take place the day after tomorrow,” Gobind said.
Before the RCI was formed, a coroner’s inquest had in January returned an “open verdict” ruling out both suicide and homicide.

These days police di RAJA Malaysia have to resort to stealing, robbing, holding people to ransom, telling lies etc.....How come these policemen do not have the respect for the “RAJA”?
A businesswoman claims that several police officers threatened to detain her brother under the Emergency Ordinance if she fails to pay them.
(Free Malaysia Today) - A businesswoman has lodged a police report alleging extortion by several police officers. In her report lodged in Klang, Chong Choi Yoke, 31, claimed that policemen from the USJ district police headquarters wanted money from her to ensure that her brother was not detained for two years under the Emergency Ordinance.
Relating the matter on behalf of Choi Yoke, her lawyer Keppy Wong (photo) said her brother, Chong Voon Han, was detained by the USJ police on Sept 22 after he had gone to the IPD (police district headquarters) to assist in an investigation.
“Voon Han went there after he was told that the police were looking for him in his office to assist in a probe. He voluntarily went to the police station and was detained on the spot,” said Wong.
Hearing of Voon Han’s arrest from his girlfriend, Choi Yoke went to the IPD but was denied permission to see him.
On Sept 25, a group of policemen brought Voon Han to his sister’s house on the pretext of searching for something. However, she was shocked to see bruises and swelling on her brother’s face.
“Voon Han told his sister that he was assaulted in detention and asked her to give the officers RM500 so that the beating will stop.
“However, she managed to fork out only RM200 and bought a few packs of cigarettes for them (officers),” said Wong, who is also Kampung Cheras Baru DAP chairman.
Later the same day, she received a call from her brother asking her to bank in RM100 to an account which she complied with.
Also on the same day, Choi Yoke received a call from an officer known as ASP Rony who told her to meet him at the Taipan police station.
There, Wong said, Choi Yoke was told by Rony that the police had no case against Voon Han as the latter had a strong alibi.
“Instead of releasing him, Rony threatened to detain Voon Han under the EO unless his sister agreed to pay him some money. Feeling helpless, Choi Yoke told Rony that she can only afford about RM3,000,” claimed Wong.
Bleeding from the head
Two days later, Voon Han was brought to the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court to get his remand extended. There, Wong said, Choi Yoke saw her brother was bleeding from the head.
“The officers also told Choi Yoke to buy food fit for 10 men and deliver it to the Taipan police station,” alleged Wong.
She was also told by her brother at the court that Rony wanted about RM10,000 to secure his release.

Such a shame that these days police have to resort to stealing, robbing, holding people to ransom, telling lies etc. Where is our police heading to! I think we should set up a RCI to look at these police conduct. Aiyah, but that was done before with result showing that almost all police from top to bottom are corrupted. Honestly we think it will be better for us citizen to look after the police rather than the other way round.

The other night, in Cork, I was chatting to a woman from Mayfield. Let’s call her May. She works in a clothes shop on Patrick Street, Cork’s main shopping street. Last Sunday, she worked all day on this prime retail thoroughfare, and guess how much she took in the till during the whole day? Well, a shop like this should be – and was in the recent past – taking about €1,800-€2,000 on Sundays, around €6,000 on Saturdays and anywhere between €1,200 and €1,500 on weekdays. Last Sunday, May took in €60 for the entire day!
Although this example might be a tad extreme, the reality for retailers all over Ireland is one of collapsing demand. Strolling down Patrick Street last Friday morning, it was clear that everyone was struggling. Every shop I counted, from the top of Washington Street to the English market, had either ‘for sale ‘or ‘massive discounts’ signs on the window. This is what happens when the economy slumps.
The question that worries May is: what happens next? When we discuss where the economy could go over the next five years, much of the discussion focuses on one of two possible outcomes: the economy will either grower it will contract. But there is another possible outcome. The economy might not grower contract; it might well stagnate. With the financial markets in turmoil everywhere and growth slowing massively all around the world, economists are mentioning the stagnation experience of Japan between 1990 and 2010 as a possible blueprint for the western world in the year ahead.
Having grown dramatically since the Second World War, Japan went on a credit binge in the 1980s and then, following a dramatic property crash and asset price crash that destroyed its banks and its national balance sheet, Japan stagnated for a generation. The economy flatlined and the national debt exploded. One of the interesting things about the discourse among economists is the sense that what happened in Japan was unique. It was not. In fact, economies stagnate all the time. There is nothing unprecedented about stagnation. Think about Ireland in the 1980s.
One of the most extraordinary things about the 1980s is that the Irish economy grew in nine out of the ten years of that decade.GNP fell only in one year -1986 – and even then, the fall was modest. However, for people living through it, the 1980s felt like a recession. Around 480,000 emigrated from Ireland, and this was in a decade when the economy actually grew 90 per cent of the time. That is what stagnation feels like, and it happens all the time all over the world.
Recent research by Goldman Sachs shows that long periods of stagnation – as happened in Ireland from the late 1970s to 1990 – are not so unusual. There have been 20 such episodes in the past century. Interestingly, stagnation often occurred in developed countries, rich countries, countries like Ireland. In all cases, these periods of stagnation are preceded by one of four types of crisis. The probability of stagnation increases dramatically if the country experiences either (1) a banking crisis, (2) a financial crash with stock and asset prices falling significantly, (3) a currency crisis or (4) a war.
The stagnation is characterised by modest growth in the economy of around 1 per cent per annum. Inflation is low, and so are interest rates. However, because the economy has just experienced a crash of some sort, the balance sheet is destroyed by debt and actually needs jaunty levels of inflation to wipe out the debt. Low interest rates don’t spur growth because there is too much debt. Unemployment in this scenario spikes upwards and stays abnormally high for long periods, leading to very high levels of long-term unemployment – or structural unemployment, as economists often call it.
And, as anyone who has been looking for work knows, it is much easier to get a new job when you have one. The longer you are out of the game, the harder it is to convince someone to take you on. House prices fall dramatically and don’t recover in the stagnating economy. They remain low for prolonged periods and, of course, the stock market gets hammered, which affects pensions. The reason pensions take a battering is that with very low interest rates, it is impossible to guarantee an easy yield. Think about it.
Take an example where the yield curve is upward sloping (as it is when an economy is growing and there is a bit of inflation in the system), short-term interest rates are 1 per cent, but long-term interest rates are 6 per cent. Then it is easy for even a dozy fund manager to generate 5 per cent for the pension fund by simply investing the pension at the long end. But if the economy is stagnant, interest rates will be very low and there will be no yield to generate the returns for pensions. This has massive ramifications for the unfunded pensions of huge semi-states and the public sector. If the economy hits a period of stagnation, how will it throw off the necessary cash to generate the money for pensions? The question is then, how likely is it that Ireland will go into a period of stagnation? It is highly likely, as we have experienced two of the four conditions for stagnation: the banking and asset price crises.
We are also in a dreadfully overvalued currency compared to our major trading partners, Britain and the US, and this means that to get competitive, we have to go through the stupidity of this ‘internal devaluation’. This means that we will grind down wages and prices over years, practically guaranteeing the stagnation that we are trying to avoid. We are entering a period that could come to be termed the ‘Great Stagnation in Ireland’. Like the 1980s, we may achieve the statistical feat of GNP growth, but it will feel like a recession characterised by high unemployment and emigration. It can be reversed by applying normal Leaving Cert economic solutions to an economy, such as a managed default and a profound change in the value of the currency. If we are not prepared to do this, welcome to stagnation, 21st-century style.
What does a 21st-century version of stagnation look like? It looks like a till with €60 in it at the end of a full trading day

Is "backstabbing" Islamic?
"If the general election is held now, Umno may lose big because the support and spirit have faded,"
(Bernama) - Umno members must return to the party's original struggle for the sake of religion, race and country by casting aside self-interest, to win the general election.
Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said this was the only way to cure the "backstabbing" disease within the party.
"Previously, Umno members sacrificed anything, including pawning their jewellery, to help the party but now their posts are for landing contracts and to become candidates.
"If the general election is held now, Umno may lose big because the support and spirit have faded," Dr Mahathir told reporters after presenting a talk, 'Bicara Negarawan,' at the premier gathering of Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JKKKP) members here Sunday.
Some 2,000 JKKKP chairman and secretary from the state attended the one-hour talk. Also present were Kedah Umno liaison chairman Datuk Paduka Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah and his deputy Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.
Dr Mahathir, however, said Barisan Nasional could win big at the general election if Umno's disease could be cured.
Asked whether the time was right for general election, he said: "It is unsuitable as lot of things need to be done and Umno is not strong enough."
"Umno still has factions and the split is still critical. If there is awareness, a sense of gratitude and unity, Barisan can win.
On PAS' plan to implement hudud law, Dr Mahathir said they had to resort to this as "they feel that they will lose."
"The country consists of a multi-religious population. If 100% are Muslims, there is no problem.
"Nik Aziz wants to implement hudud only for Muslims and this is not fair. Islam demands justice in all matters."

Mahathir is the one who started the rot in UMNO with his UMNO Baru. And now this destroyer is telling his UMNO Baru deadwood to go back to the original UMNO struggle. What struggle? After 54 years of which 40 years are NEP driven, he is saying that UMNO is still struggling? Then there is something really wrong with him and UMNO Baru. The people who are struggling are those that Mahathir and UMNO robbed in the last 40 years, while pretending to "fight" for them all this while. Why are the UMNO deadwood living ravish lifestyles when loads of malays are struggling to make a daily living selling nasi lemak and kuih by the roadside. Even this difficult livelihood of the poor malays are under threat from Mahathir's legacy of importing Indons illegally to make up his crazy dream of Vision 2020 with 70 million population.
Yes, in 2020 there will not be 70 million population but certainly there will be at least 10 million of illegal and undesirable Indons, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Africans, Middle Easterners and Eastern Europeans populating this country. ...

(Bernama) - Umno members must return to the party's original struggle for the sake of religion, race and country by casting aside self-interest, to win the general election.///--Mamakthir
Compared the two statements above and see for yourself the contradictions.
UMNO's struggle is only in making use of government resources, and nothing else. They are not dieing for the struggle, or die in the process of struggling. It is using government resources, and the work they do is to get Malays to vote them in power.
Mamakthir said that it is not fair to implement hudud only for Muslims. How is it fair to have government resources utilized for religion and race which means Malays only?
By saying that it is not fair to implement hudud only for Muslims, Mamakthir implies that hudud is not in Muslims' interests. That is why he implied that non-Muslims should also be subject to hudud. All this goes to show that he thinks Malays are not in favour of hudud. Or was he worried only that hudud would catch up with him? ..

"struggle"?!
Is it any struggle to lie back, open the legs and think of the abundance of our green and pleasant land where cronies can always be around to feed the greedy and unpleasant parasites?!
Where for the Brits, "Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand", our patriots murdered and all for a sick bunch who only had only to lie back and be lackeys for the Brits?!
With Brits now gone, and with their gifts of the ISA and other oppressive laws to ease the business of abusing the people and robbing the land, where has there ever been any struggle to be parasites?!
When elections are rigged by ghosts, self-cloning soldiers and those with mulitple-voter personality, ain't it a breeze to be parasites than a "struggle"?!
In fact, Mamakthir is the worst when it comes to pampering parasites so that there would never be any struggle for him to abuse the country, and never any struggle for those parasites to lift one finger to take food to mouth!
Having national polls too soon may cost the party dearly
(The Malaysian Insider) - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today factionalism and internal sabotage continues to plague the ruling coalition’s lynchpin, Umno, and warned that having national polls too soon may cost the party dearly.
This is the second time in recent months the former prime minister of 22 years has advised Barisan Nasional (BN) to hold off holding an early general election — previously predicted to take place during the November school holidays — by saying the time was not ripe.
The country’s fourth PM told reporters in Kota Kinabalu on May 7 the government has plenty of time to carry out its plans and choose suitable candidates to field for the 13th general election, adding it could stretch this until 2012.
The current mandate expires only in 2013 but political parties have been in election mode since the Sarawak state poll last April.
“If the general election is held now, Umno may lose big because the support and spirit has faded,” Dr Mahathir was reported as saying today by Bernama Online.
“Umno still has factions and the split is still critical. If there is awareness, a sense of gratitude and unity, BN can win,” the state news agency quoted him further.
Still-influential at 86, the politician urged his Umno colleagues to return to the party’s original fight to protect religion, race and country by casting aside self-interest to win the general election.
He advised Umno members to overcome their disappointment at not being picked for the general election, saying they still stood to gain in other ways.
BN lost its customary two-thirds parliamentary majority and four states, including wealthy Selangor and Penang, in Election 2008.

Just look at this bitter and twisted fellow.
Najib must call for an early election now. He knowns he is done for and it is time he took all the corrupted
politicians in UMNo down the gurgler. Mahatier is damn worried for his own skin and that of his family members. If Pakatan takes over the governmanet JUST IMAGINE how many of the current, ex ministers and their family members will land up in the jail. It is also for this reason why Najib wants to get rid of ISA in March and then bring on the election. This is an insurance for him and the UMNO basterds that if they loose the government then the Pakatan Government cannot use the ISA against them.
Now this fool wants to outsmart the electorate by telling the UMNO party to differ the election.
NAZIB you know this old fool and UMNO is going to knife you. So you take the first step and call in the election and knife them all BIG TIME before you go. You will fall so take them along with you. Do the right thing and Malaysians willl have some apathy towards you and your corrupt family. ...

Believe you me that the breaking up of UMNO is not at all a bad thing... but with the recent millions of new citizens, that statement would be a red herring thrown to actually initiate early polls...

Or was he worried only that hudud would catch up with him? ..

Walk without a swagger and travel overseas with the senior, real Datin, not the younger fresher prettier Datin-to-be? Live in ordinary houses, not castles? The people who struggle today are those not in politics because they know they need to struggle. BN politicians don't struggle anymore - it's fun and having a good time all the time, and when you need to throw a smokescreen dial PERKASA, Ezam, Wee Choo Keong, Zulkifli, etc.

They can cheat by postal votes. PATIs turn voters as what happened in Sabah... eventually the Sabahan are deprived. By getting the dead people to votes... phantoms voters. By misplacing the voters names (especially if they know who are the opposition supporters) from the electoral list. List them under different constituencies so thet they become confused. Not agreeing to using the indellible ink. etc etc etc. EC can be their accomplice in this.

Do the right thing and Malaysians willl have some apathy towards you and your corrupt family. ...

It’s time to lift this veil of beguiling deceitfulness
THE STAR SAYS . . .
PAS, hudud law and an Islamic state are the inseparable trio that, of the party's own choosing, would simply refuse to go away.
Last year, PAS rejected any compromise on hudud law despite the DAP's objections.
So much for consultation within Pakatan Rakyat. The issue raged heatedly, then subsided.
Earlier this year, PAS Youth said hudud was no longer a priority, after the party president's keynote speech at the 57th Muktamar downplayed it.
Then speculation of an impending general election grew.
PAS spiritual leader and Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat again said hudud law would be implemented nationwide should Pakatan win the general election.
This policy volcano, until then dormant but never extinct, rumbled again. PAS would now make Kelantan an Islamic state through the syariah court system.
Conservative Islamism has returned with all its controversies fully intact, and Pakatan's glaring discrepancies flared again.
Once more, PAS is insisting on an Islamic state despite all the objections.
This is no way to run a party alliance, let alone a multi-ethnic Malaysia with sizeable minorities.
Changing the Constitution to allow for what the world today regards as inhumane punishments, along with vastly disparate forms of legal testimony, is also disturbing.
To pretend that hudud law will not affect non-Muslims is dangerous and nonsensical fiction.
Pakatan has tried to ban entertainment during Ramadan, stop Muslim staff from working in establishments serving alcohol, planned to disrupt music concerts and seen family disputes arise after a family member had undergone religious conversion.
If these issues are trivial or merely “ghostly apparitions”, more will emerge when hudud law is implemented.
All Malaysians and even foreign visitors and businesses will be affected, to varying degrees.
Although hudud is contained in the Quran, not all Muslims are clamouring for it.
Meanwhile, PAS has demanded silence from doubters while Pakatan has imposed a gag order on the subject.
Sadly, issues of major national significance are being swept under the carpet by those demanding free speech for themselves and transparency in others.
If hudud law were so much better, it would not be so controversial or should at least be open to free enquiry and debate.
This nation's future is too important to be left in the hands of power seekers who are fundamentally incompatible.
