Iskandar Malaysia Green Programme offers hope for graduates
By FARIK ZOLKEPLI
JOHOR BARU: For 23-year-old Farhana Aris, the Iskandar Malaysia Green Programme is the perfect stepping stone towards finding suitable employment.
The Business Administration (Marketing) degree holder, who graduated from UiTM in Malacca, opted for the programme after having difficulties securing a job since her graduation last year.
She worked temporarily at several places and the jobs were not related to her degree.
“I signed up for the programme in October as it offers a wide range of useful skills and attachments with government-linked companies,” she said when met at the second Iskandar Malaysia Information Day here recently.
Farhana said the programme provided the participants with communication skills and brushed them up on English and teamwork.
Fellow participant Mohd Faiz Mohd Nor, 23, said the programme enhanced one’s confidence in facing the working world.
“I was turned down by many prospective employers because they wanted those with experience.
“What better way is there to gain experience than by signing up on the programme and go on practical training with various companies,” he said, adding that he had learned the importance of teamwork.
Mohd Faiz, who obtained a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Taylor’s College earlier this year, said the skills obtained in the programme were useful.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old Siti Safiyah Sulaiman said the programme enabled her to strengthen her command of English.
“I am able to speak more fluently in English, which is one of the most important requirements of employers.
“I feel the skills obtained are valuable and the teaching was of highest quality,” said Safiyah, a Mass Communications and Media graduate from UiTM.
Iskandar Regional Development Authority assistant vice-president of human capital and social development, Mohamed Rahiman, said that 250 graduates were selected to be pioneers in the programme.
“It is from Oct 19 to Dec 24 this year and the participants are provided with communication training and project management skills.
“Upon completion, they will be sent for attachments with companies from Jan 5 to Oct 2 next year,” he said.
He said the participants were fresh graduates who were jobless or with jobs not related to their areas of study.
Mohamed said that more than 30 companies had so far committed to accept the participants for attachments.
“It will expose the participants to the mechanisms of the companies. We aim to sign up at least 50 companies,” he said.
